Latest Book Review
Our FSBC library has many excellent nonfiction books which will aid you in your spiritual growth. One of these is: Jesus Among Other Gods: The Absolute Claims of this Christian Message by Ravi Zacharias.
This nonfiction book is not always an easy read for someone who does not have a philosophical bent of mind. But with perseverance and some skim reading, jewel after jewel can be found in this book.
Ravi Zacharias was born and raised in India; the home of thousands of gods; the home of the caste system; the EAST. He heard it said many times "We all come through different routes and end up in the same place." But he says to the reader "God is not a place or an experience or a feeling."
After this statement along with a little of his history he begins taking the unique claims of Jesus and showing how they hold up in all ways and how they are not answered by different major faiths. These claims are based on the following five specific happenings in the Bible. In each section Zacharias explains how other religions can not handle these points using examples and philosophy.
- "Where do you live?", a very Eastern question, tackles the question of who Jesus is.
- "Destroy this temple, and I will raise it again in three days." discusses faith and why we have it or don't have it as well as reinforcing many teachings of the Bible.
- "This is my body... Take and eat. This is my blood... Drink all of it." discusses the craving we have to be one with God and how He answers it.
- "Who sinned this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" considers the problem of suffering and evil in the world which is only explained by the complete story of God's plan.
- The four times Jesus was silent at his trial points out that Jesus' silence showed "goodness in the face of orchestrated evil", "perception" of God's work being used for man's purposes, "consistency" in fighting slander and the "fulfilled mission" of Jesus himself.
- God actually spoke at the Garden of Eden, Jesus pointed out that we shouldn't change the meaning of the test in the garden of Temptation, Jesus gave his life for the ones who killed him at Gethsemane and showed that He is alive at the garden of the tomb.
I am extremely grateful for Ravi Zacharias' wife who helped him by going through his writings and making them more understandable. Book review by Sally Shook.
